Description

The Beijing Confucius Temple, located at No. 13, Guozijian Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing, is a must - visit cultural heritage site. As one of the four major Confucius temples in China and the second - largest after the one in Qufu, it has a rich history dating back to 1302 (the sixth year of Dade in the Yuan Dynasty). The temple's architecture is a remarkable display of traditional Chinese design. The main buildings along the central axis include the Xian Shi Men, Da Cheng Men, Da Cheng Dian, and Chongsheng Ci. The use of yellow glazed tiles on the main buildings symbolizes the highest imperial architectural specification, exuding a sense of grandeur and solemnity. The Xian Shi Men retains much of its Yuan - Dynasty style, while the Da Cheng Dian, the heart of the temple, was expanded and renovated over the centuries. Inside the Da Cheng Dian, you can see the memorial tablets of Confucius and his disciples, along with the imperial plaques bestowed by emperors of different dynasties. One of the most significant features of the Beijing Confucius Temple is the 198 inscribed steles of imperial examination graduates. These steles, erected during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, record the names, hometowns, and rankings of 51,624 imperial examination graduates. They are invaluable historical materials for studying the ancient Chinese imperial examination system. Famous historical figures like Yu Qian, Lin Zexu, and Shen Junru also have their names on these steles. In addition to the steles, the temple also houses other attractions. The Banjian Bai, an ancient cypress tree, is said to be able to distinguish between loyal and treacherous officials. The Yanshui Hu, a well, is believed to endow scholars with inspiration. The Chongsheng Ci, a separate courtyard, is dedicated to the ancestors of Confucius. Throughout the day, traditional ritual music and dance performances are held in the Chongsheng Shrine. These performances, such as the "Dacheng Liyue," showcase the profoundness of traditional Chinese culture and add a touch of cultural charm to your visit. Visiting the Beijing Confucius Temple is not only a journey through history but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the essence of Confucianism and traditional Chinese values.
