Description

Yuanmingyuan Park, also known as the Old Summer Palace, was originally built in the early 18th century by Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty. Expanded significantly by Emperor Qianlong, it became the largest imperial garden complex in China, serving as the emperor's primary residence during winter months. The park consists of three main sections: Changchun Garden, Qichun Garden, and Yuanming Garden. The site holds profound historical significance as it was deliberately destroyed by British and French forces during the Second Opium War in 1860 as retaliation against the Qing government. Today, the ruins stand as a powerful testament to China's colonial history and are frequently referenced in educational materials. Visitors can explore the extensive grounds, including the iconic Western-style ruins that showcase the blend of European and Chinese architectural styles. The panoramic model exhibition provides a comprehensive view of the original grandeur of this imperial retreat. The park serves both as an important historical site and a poignant reminder of China's past.
